WASHINGTON – Today, Representatives Ted Lieu (CA-33) and Katie Hill (CA-25) announced that the effort to authorize the West Los Angeles National Guard Armory to expand its homeless shelter services passed a major hurdle thanks to provisions in the House-passed National Defense Authorization Act. The effort, spearheaded in the House by Lieu and Hill, modifies the deed at the West LA Armory to allow a shelter to operate on the property year-round.

WASHINGTONToday, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019. The final bill includes four amendments spearheaded by Rep. Lieu to stop the emergency arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates; limit Department of Defense funds from being used at Trump properties; prohibit U.S. military refueling of aircraft in Yemen; and require a report to Congress detailing the U.S. strategy for Libya.

Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congresswoman Kathleen Rice (D-NY) urged FBI Director Christopher Wray to investigate whether the CEO of Phantom Fireworks or other company executives provided fireworks for the President's Fourth of July celebration in exchange for the Administration forgoing $300 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, including fireworks.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House passed his amendment to the NDAA limiting Defense funds from being used at Trump-owned properties. The amendment would prevent the President from profiting off of American taxpayers by forcing government employees to stay at his properties and subsidize his businesses. The amendment enables funds to be used at Trump-owned properties if the President agrees to reimburse the Treasury Department for costs associated with his stay.

In June, the House passed Congressman Lieu's amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2020 on a bipartisan basis to block the execution of these 22 emergency sales.

WASHINGTON – This week, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County), Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Congressman Doug Lamborn are introducing the bipartisan "U.S.-U.K. Directed Energy Cooperation Act." The bill enables the Secretary of Defense to work with United Kingdom counterparts on developing directed energy technology. This partnership will enable both countries to collaborate on technology that can offer the countries a non-lethal defense against advance missiles and unmanned aerial systems.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) introduced H.R. 3571, the bipartisan "City and State Diplomacy Act", which will support state and local diplomacy with counterparts abroad. The bill will establish an Office of Subnational Diplomacy at the State Department, which will coordinate overall U.S. policy and programs in support of city and state engagement with foreign governments and officials.
