REP LIEU INTRODUCES NDAA AMENDMENT TO BLOCK SAUDI ARMS SALES

June 27, 2019

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after introducing an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 that would prohibit the emergency sale of arms to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On June 18, 2019, the House passed Congressman Lieu's amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2020 on a bipartisan basis to block the execution of these 22 emergency sales.

"This amendment is one of many channels we're pursuing to stop the sale of these arms without congressional review. We still have open questions about why the Trump Administration is pushing through these sales, and why they're afraid of routine congressional review. It is Congress's job to make sure arms sales are in the best interest of the American public and our national security. Maybe Trump wants to circumvent us because he knows these sales don't meet that criteria? Whatever the reason, we're doing everything in our power to stop the ‘emergency' sales because this Administration cannot act with impunity."
