Santa Monica staff, officials and anti-airport activists flew to Washington D.C. this week to advocate for closure of the Santa Monica Airport.
The group, including Rep. Ted Lieu, Santa Monica Mayor Kevin McKeown, Santa Monica Mayor Pro Tempore Tony Vazquez, Santa Monica Councilmember Sue Himmelrich and 16 other local constituents, met with FAA in a meeting facilitated by Lieu and Congresswoman Karen Bass.
According to those present at the meeting, FAA officials listened without comment.

Didn't we already deal with the airport in the last election? Aren't we done with that one already? Those of us who live near the airport hear this talk every day. We also hear the racket of helicopters, screams of jets, noise of small planes and the occasional random celebratory flyovers.
We hear them taking off and landing every day, 365 days a year, until 11 p.m., and sometimes landing after 11 p.m., since landing is not restricted. On average, we see and hear a crash every year! Keep in mind; the runway is within 300 feet of homes.
Freedom from unwarranted search and seizure is one of the great ideals that this county was founded upon. It is also an issue that has garnered a great deal of attention since 2013, when former National Security Agency (NSA) analyst Edward Snowden revealed the extent to which ordinary Americans are being spied upon by their own government.

Los Angeles - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D | Los Angeles) released the following statement following the news that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has found a match between one sample from the Refugio/Santa Barbara oil spill and a tar ball from the Manhattan Beach/South Bay incident.
WASHINGTON - Yesterday, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D | Los Angeles)’s amendment to H.R. 2578, the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2016 was adopted by voice vote. The federal government’s Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program is funded out of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)’s Salaries and Expenses Account. Last year, $18 million was used for marijuana eradication/suppression.
