WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu, Congressman Rodney Davis, Congressman Glenn Thompson, Congressman Mike Thompson and Congresswoman Ann Kuster reintroduced the Bear Protection Act. The bill seeks to prohibit the import, export, possession, transport and sale of bear organs. Allowing commercial poaching for bear organs puts the animals at risk for inhumane treatment. The reintroduction of the bill comes months after China's Ministry of Health announced that it considered bear bile an effective palliative treatment for COVID-19.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) announced the reintroduction of his Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Senate co-lead Senator Corey Booker (D-NJ). The Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act incentivizes states to move away from a money bail system. Instead, the bill encourages states to replace their existing bail systems with assessments made on proven data outcomes—a more just system for evaluating the flight and safety risk of defendants facing trial.

Speaking at The Hill's "The Loss of Nature: A Global Threat" event, Lieu said climate change has prompted an upheaval in biodiversity, with policies needed at the state, federal and international to address the problem.

WASHINGTON - On Saturday, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) hosted his congressional district's seventh-annual reception for the Congressional Art Competition virtually. Students from 21 different high schools submitted 154 pieces of art for this year's competition. These submissions included 75 photographs, 24 paintings, 25 drawings, 15 mixed-media pieces, and 15 other pieces that included computer-generated art. The winner, Ethan Azari from Palisades Charter High School, submitted a piece called The Persistence of Love.

Last Tuesday, a gunman shot and killed eight people at three different spas in the Atlanta area. Six of the victims were women of Asian descent, yet within hours of arresting the suspect, 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, authorities were seemingly happy to take his word for it that the killings were not motivated by racism but a sexual addiction he wanted to "eliminate," as though one can't be a racist and a misogynist simultaneously.
