REP LIEU STATEMENT ON AFGHANISTAN

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the last American troops departed from Afghanistan.

"After 20 grueling years, the United States military has left Afghanistan. It's an important step towards ending U.S. involvement in endless wars, something I have called for throughout my time in Congress.

"I commend our men and women in uniform, who helped as many people as possible evacuate under such dangerous conditions. And I am grateful to President Biden for making this tough – but right – call. As a veteran, I recognize how difficult this moment must be for those who served in Afghanistan. Your hard work and heroic efforts are not unrecognized. For those who mourn loved ones lost during this conflict – my heart aches for you. Thousands served in this conflict and we owe them and their families a debt that can never be repaid.

"The U.S. military is no longer in Afghanistan but the U.S. will continue to hold the Taliban accountable as we advocate for those wanting to flee Afghanistan. We have to guarantee Afghan refugees can seek safe haven here in the U.S. and with our allies.

"Ultimately, this is a somber moment; One that I firmly believe needed to happen – but one that is shrouded by sadness. I'm praying for the United States and for servicemembers and veterans as we close out this difficult chapter in American history."
