Blue skies and ideal weather welcomed Southern Californians who turned out by the thousands to honor their myriad neighbors who served the nation in the armed forces.
Among the most homespun of tributes, the San Fernando Valley Veterans Day parade returned on Saturday at 11:11 a.m. as it does on the holiday each year.
LOS ANGELES – Over Veterans Day weekend, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County), a United States Air Force veteran, hosted his annual virtual event honoring local veterans in Los Angeles County. Eight veterans joined to share experiences from their time in the service and non-military community members joined to listen in. Veterans from the United States Air Force, Marine Corps, Army and Navy were present.

Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) joined Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) and other state and local officials at the groundbreaking of five new buildings at the West Los Angeles VA. Buildings 401A, 402, 404, 156 and 157 will provide supportive housing for 380 unhoused and at-risk veterans and their families.

LOS ANGELES – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) joined VA Secretary Denis McDonough and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass at the grand opening of two new supportive housing units at the West Los Angeles VA. Buildings 205 and 208 will provide 120 supportive housing units for unhoused and at-risk veterans and their families. These two new buildings are a part of the VA’s ongoing efforts to open more supportive housing for veterans and follow the opening of a 59-unit building on campus in February.
In 2015, the year I was sworn into Congress, the West LA VA was a mess. Because of mismanagement and neglect, significant portions of the campus had been leased out to private enterprises that were doing anything but serving veterans. Medical care did not meet expectations for excellence. Large chunks of the land were being used for parking lots, a parrot sanctuary, a rental car company, and other purposes that did not principally benefit veterans.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced three new lease agreements for the development of 264 additional permanent supportive housing units for homeless veterans at the West LA VA campus. The new buildings are expected to open in 2024 and 2025, and will be “move-in” ready – equipped with furniture and access to amenities including a central community space, a fitness room, onsite management and case workers’ offices and more.
