While the federal government needs a warrant to seize your laptop, it can access revealing details through what lawmakers say is a glaring back door: cloud-stored metadata, the information tucked within files that offers clues about who created them, when and how.

The data may seem innocuous, given that it doesn't reveal the full contents of any given document, video or image. But lawmakers say it can be used to identify key facts in an investigation, such as who was involved, what role they played and when the events took place.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Air Force veterans Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County), Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), and Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin urging the Department of Defense to provide much-needed aircraft, air defense systems, and drones to Ukraine. The letter is in response to repeated requests from the Ukrainian military for critical air assets that would help them gain air superiority in the ongoing war against Russia.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressmen Ted W. Lieu (D-CA-33) and Jimmy Gomez (D-CA-34) sent a criminal referral to Attorney General Merrick Garland alleging that former President Donald Trump violated the Federal Election Campaign Act and Federal Election Commission regulations. Earlier this week, the former President appeared to directly solicit help for his re-election campaign from Russian President Vladimir Putin by requesting that Putin share negative information about President Biden and his family.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congressman Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) led two separate letters to U.S. Ambassador to India Taranjit Singh Sandhu and U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Asad Majeed Khan urging their governments to condemn Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The bipartisan letters are in response to both countries' abstention from the UN General Assembly's March 2nd vote, in which 141 countries voted to condemn Russia for its unprovoked and unjustified attack on the sovereign nation of Ukraine.

LOS ANGELES - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the Space Development Agency (SDA) awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation in Redondo Beach a contract worth up to $692 million. The award will support the development and production of a constellation of 42 satellites to deliver quality high-volume data in support of U.S. military operations around the world.

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) is urging the United Nations to address the human rights crisis in Egypt. In a letter, Rep. Lieu and other Members of the Egypt Human Rights Caucus are calling for the UN Human Rights Council to establish a monitoring and reporting mechanism on Egypt. The Members argue that the UN must do more to address what they view as the Egyptian government's systematic repression of dissent and civic discourse over the last decade.

The Members, who are both U.S. Air Force veterans, wrote a letter to Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall outlining how the Air Force can support Ukraine as it defends its democracy.
