LOS ANGELES - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) sent a letter to the President of the Los Angeles Police Commission urging her to investigate instances that appear to show uniformed LAPD officers physically assaulting people gathering to protest police violence. The letter follows news reports and videos posted to social media that show police using batons, rubber bullets and a chemical spray against protestors, some of whom appear to be retreating.

In the letter, Mr. Lieu writes:

U.S. Reps. TJ Cox, D-Fresno, and Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, are calling for an expansion of the Farm to Food Bank program to alleviate food insecurity exacerbated by the pandemic. The program, known as Farm to Family in California, reimburses farmers who donate surplus agricultural products to food banks.

New bipartisan legislation would provide $500 billion in aid to state and local governments, territories and tribes to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, with the smallest communities in line for a direct slice of the money, unlike some earlier iterations.

The legislation has drawn bipartisan backing in both chambers and support from several local government organizations, such as the National Association of Counties and U.S. Conference of Mayors.

WASHINGTON - Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) introduced a bill to allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide food aid to veterans who are not living in permanent supportive housing on campus. The SAVE Act - or Supporting At-risk Veterans in an Emergency Act - will ensure the West Los Angeles VA and other VA campuses around the country have the legal authority to provide veterans experiencing hardship access to food.

A 58-year-old man became the sixth Terminal Island inmate to test positive for COVID-19 and then die as the prison continues to get pummled by the virus.

Eduardo Robles-Holguin originally had been convicted of illegally reentering the United States and died in a hospital on Monday, May 4.

He reported symptoms to the medical staff, tested positive for the disease and, on April 25, was placed on a ventilator at a hospital, officials said.
