Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House Judiciary Committee held a historic markup of H.J.Res. 79, which would facilitate the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). If ratified, the ERA will enshrine women's equality in the Constitution by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex. H.J.Res. 79, which was introduced by Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), would remove the arbitrarily short deadline for ratification established when Congress originally passed the ERA in 1972.
