Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) announced that Gary Hall Jr., former Olympic swimmer and outspoken patient advocate, will join him at the State of the Union in Washington, DC on February 4, 2020. After being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, Hall went on to become an Olympic champion, winning a career total of ten Olympic medals. Although he represented America on the global stage, he still struggled to afford health insurance and insulin payments.

Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) sent a letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper calling for a regular public disclosure of the number of animals the Defense Department uses in its research. Presently, the American public does not have a full accounting of all species used in animal research at the DoD. An annual disclosure by the department would ensure the DoD continues its efforts to reduce the unnecessary use of animals in testing and research.
