When I went to medical school in the 1980s, it was standard practice to have students cut apart live dogs and other animals as part of the curriculum to teach them medical skills and concepts. Since then, these crude and cruel animal labs have been abandoned in medical schools and advanced surgical courses in favor of realistic human simulators that are more humane, cost-efficient and effective.

Apparently, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) didn't get the memo about this.

Every time 2-year-old Mubasher hears an evacuation airplane cutting through the sky above his safe house in Kabul, Afghanistan, he runs to the living room window.

"Look, the plane is here!" he calls out to his mother, Madina, in Pashto. "It's coming to take us to my baba."

Mubasher's grandfather lives thousands of miles away, in Los Angeles, where he and his niece Paula Nassiri are desperately working to get their family members out of Kabul.

U.S. Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Los Angeles) and Katie Porter (D-Orange County) on Aug. 6 introduced the Preventing Harmful Exposure to Phthalates Act, a bill to prevent phthalates from contaminating the U.S. food supply.

Phthalates are chemicals added to plastic products used throughout the food production process and have been known to cause serious health problems. U.S. Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) will be leading companion legislation in the Senate.
