Democrats in both chambers of Congress are calling for an investigation into the Navy's firing of an aircraft carrier commander who had pleaded for help with a coronavirus outbreak on his ship.
WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congressman Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) called for an investigation into whether the Secretary of the Navy acted inappropriately by relieving an aircraft carrier Captain who expressed concern about coronavirus spreading among servicemembers in the Captain's charge.
In the letter, the Members wrote:
Dear Acting Inspector General Fine:

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) urged Vice President Mike Pence, head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, to articulate a plan for how the federal government will address potential shortages of a vital component of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) tests. Public reports indicate that multiple clinical labs in the U.S. do not have an adequate supply of chemical reagents, which are necessary for the COVID-19 tests.
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Family First Coronavirus Response Act, which will offer support for families, first responders and members of our community to help the country address the spread of the coronavirus.

President Donald Trump has described the World Health Organization's (WHO) assessment of the COVID-19 global death rate as being based on a "false number."
In a phone interview with Fox News, the president said he believed coronavirus rates were closer to "a fraction of one percent," and not the 3.4 percent rate that the WHO stated.
That figure was cited by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Tuesday, who pointed out the mortality rate was much higher than that of the seasonal flu.
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after both Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County declared a public health emergency as a proactive measure to stave off the spread of COVID-19 ("the coronavirus") in the Los Angeles community. These public health emergency declarations will enable officials to more easily acquire federal funding to assist with efforts to address and contain the coronavirus. It follows similar actions by other localities in California and around the country.
