In what has become a real local tradition, the publishers of The Malibu Times and founders of the Dolphin Foundation, Arnold and Karen York, hosted the 26th annual Dolphin Awards and brunch on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Malibu West Beach Club. This year, 11 awards were given out.

Coordinator Mary Higgins organized the event, which offered a selection of food from Jennifer Naylor Catering as well as wine from Malibu Family Wines. Decorations were provided from Malibaloons and Cosentino’s.

The debate over whether Apple Inc. should help the Justice Department unlock the phone of San Bernardino attacker Syed Rizwan Farook has gotten bogged down in technical details over the scope of the government's request, the handling of the phone in the days after the deadly mass shooting and the distinction between a passcode and an encryption strategy.

That's all a distraction. It's also dangerous for the future of personal privacy and, if you believe in it, the functioning of our democracy.

WASHINGTON - Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California is calling on Congress to take a tougher stand against Apple for its refusal to help the FBI unlock the iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, saying a proposal for a commission to study the issue doesn’t go far enough. “I have been reeling back in surprise because I didn’t think a company would set itself above the law, particularly a California-based company like Apple,” Feinstein said in an interview with McClatchy.

Congressman Ted Lieu, D-Calif., on Tuesday urged the federal government to drop its push for Apple to comply with a California court order requiring it to help unlock a mass shooting suspect’s iPhone, arguing that the debate belongs in the court of public opinion rather than the court of law.

In a letter addressed to FBI Director James Comey, the representative requested that the agency withdraw its demand that Apple comply with an order issued by a California magistrate judge on Feb. 16.

Last week, a magistrate ordered Apple to help the FBI hack an iPhone used by a shooter in the San Bernardino attack, and Apple decided to publicly fight the order. The US government is apparently making access demands that even China hasn’t asked for, essentially asking Apple to write custom software to disable security features put in place to prevent people from breaking into devices. Speaking of China, the New York Times removed a passage on the country in its story.
