REP LIEU SECURES NEARLY $1 MILLION FOR UCLA QUANTUM SCIENCE HUB

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) announced that he secured nearly $1 million for a University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) project to create a Quantum Information Science Hub. The Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations bill was signed into law by President Biden on Saturday, March 9, 2024. The new lab will develop and refine qubits, which are the quantum bits that power quantum computers. The creation of the lab will further research in the area to understand which qubit is the best choice for building a quantum computer.
“I am always thrilled to secure federal funding for UCLA’s outstanding research endeavors and look forward to seeing what this new lab will accomplish in the field of computer science,” said Rep. Lieu. “As a recovering computer science major, I understand the importance of investing in technology that can change our future. I am pleased to represent UCLA in Congress and love seeing the incredible strides Bruins are making in all facets of academic research.”
$963,000 for the UCLA Quantum Information Science Hub: This project will fund the acquisition of a laser to create a state-of-the-art testbed that will allow UCLA to rapidly develop, validate, and refine trapped atom qubits. Qubits are the quantum bits that power quantum computers. At present, one of the most pressing goals in the field is to understand which qubit is the best choice for building a quantum computer. This project would create a lab populated with these flexible laser systems that can be shared amongst UCLA researchers and affiliated collaborators in industry and academia from across the region.
This year, in Fiscal Year 2024, Rep. Lieu secured over $11 million in federal funding for 14 local projects across Los Angeles County. The projects improve community infrastructure, protect the environment, address homelessness and more.
