REPS LIEU, GARCIA AND ESCOBAR CALL FOR TRUMP LAWYER SIDNEY POWELL TO BE DISBARRED FOLLOWING GUILTY PLEA

October 25, 2023

WASHINGTON -  Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) led a letter with Representatives Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) and Veronica Escobar (D-TX) urging the Texas Bar's Chief Disciplinary Counsel to revoke the law license of former President Trump's lawyer, Sidney Powell. This letter comes after Sidney Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts in the Georgia election interference case. In 2021, the Members sent an initial letter to the Chief Disciplinary Counsel calling for her to be disbarred following reports that she knew she was making false statements about 2020 election fraud.

In the letter, the Members write:

Dear Chief Disciplinary Counsel,

We write to follow-up on our letter dated September 24, 2021. As we told you then, Ms. Powell allegedly made numerous false statements in various venues related to her frivolous attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. On October 19, 2023, Ms. Powell plead guilty to charges in the State of Georgia related to efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Given this guilty plea in Georgia, it is more evident than ever before that Ms. Powell must be disbarred.

In our previous letter, we cited public reports of actions by Ms. Powell that appear to violate the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct. She has now pled guilty to six counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performance of election duty. It is now clear that Ms. Powell violated several Rules of Professional Conduct and should be disbarred immediately.

Her admission of guilt in a Georgia court of law publicly demonstrates Ms. Powell’s failure to abide by the Rule of Professional Conduct and shows she is not fit to practice law. We urge swift action to remove her ability to practice law. Each day that passes without a resolution undermines the public's confidence in the legal profession as a force for good and further disgraces the bar.

 Sincerely,
