REP LIEU STATEMENT ON VOTING AGAINST EXTREME MAGA DEFENSE BILL

July 14, 2023

WASHINGTON  - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) released the following statement after he voted no on the House’s version of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 (NDAA).

“I voted against the extreme House Republicans’ National Defense Authorization this year because it contains harmful provisions that will hurt members of our armed forces and make America less safe. This bill restricts access to women’s reproductive healthcare for our nation’s heroes. It makes it so that pregnant servicemembers or their spouses will have restricted access to life-saving measures like abortion. House Republicans’ extreme NDAA also attacks transgender servicemembers’ access to healthcare, which will make service more difficult for them. This bill curbs our military’s ability to recruit America’s best and brightest. As a result, Republicans just voted to harm our military readiness and make us less safe. I expect that the Democratic Senate will put forth a far more sensible bill that puts our servicemembers first, instead of inserting them into the GOP culture wars.”
