REP LIEU STATEMENT ON U.S. WITHDRAWAL FROM NUCLEAR TREATY WITH RUSSIA
LOS ANGELES - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement in response to the United States’ formal withdrawal from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia. The treaty was ratified in 1988 to slow a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.
“The world was safer because the INF prevented escalations in nuclear arms development between the U.S. and Russia. Without it, we’ll be back to Cold War era risks of nuclear catastrophe. No one wins a nuclear war, whether the nukes are delivered by intermediate range missiles, sea-launched missiles or bombers. This is another example of the Trump Administration’s failure to work with Congress, resulting in dangerous and haphazard foreign policy choices. The Trump Administration has made another horrible decision in foreign policy by withdrawing from the INF treaty.”
