Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after it was announced that President Trump is expected to revoke California’s authority to set stringent car pollution standards.

“As the President visits my district this week, he’s working simultaneously to destroy a critical part of our state’s efforts to combat climate change and protect public health. California’s ability to set stringent car emissions standards has put our state at the forefront of developing fuel efficient cars and reducing car pollution. From fires to droughts to flooding, our state and the health of Californians are uniquely susceptible to the impacts of climate change, which is why it is critical that the state be able to set higher emissions standards than the Federal government.

“What has become clear is that Trump is harming California – a beacon of progress, innovation and prosperity – and is punishing our efforts to make the world a safe and livable place for future generations. This latest step in his efforts to target our state is reprehensible and legally dubious. Climate change is our greatest existential threat. We will fight to stop this Administration from wreaking havoc on our environment.”
