REP LIEU STATEMENT ON REPORTS OF UNAUTHORIZED HYSTERECTOMIES AT ICE FACILITY
WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after a whistleblower reported that multiple women detained by ICE in Georgia were given hysterectomies without their explicit consent. Rep. Lieu sent a letter with Reps. Jayapal, Chu, Nadler, Lofgren and others to the Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General calling for an investigation.
“I am deeply disturbed by reports that women in ICE detention had their uteruses removed without their informed consent," Rep. Lieu said. "This whistleblower complaint details that potentially grievous human rights violations occurred while these women were in federal custody. Women are entitled to bodily autonomy, including when being held in detention. DHS’s IG needs to investigate immediately."
