REP LIEU STATEMENT ON RECENT VIOLENT INCIDENTS ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES

May 1, 2024

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement in relation to recent violent incidents on college campuses.

“Freedom of speech is a foundational right in the United States, and enabling free expression remains the hallmark of a strong democratic society. I believe in this principle firmly, even when I disagree with the contents of the speech in question. What we cannot accept or tolerate is violence, targeted harassment or vandalism. Those are not examples of protected speech. I condemn the violence that occurred at UCLA and other campuses in the strongest terms possible. I hope and expect that law enforcement will hold perpetrators accountable, and that moving forward we can respect our shared humanity even when we disagree strongly with one another.”
