REP LIEU STATEMENT ON HYPERION SETTLEMENT

August 22, 2024

LOS ANGELES - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the City of Los Angeles agreed to pay $20 million to help clean the Santa Monica Bay after the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant spill in 2021.

“I applaud federal and city officials for reaching this settlement and focusing resources on cleaning up the Santa Monica Bay. This is a very necessary step in accountability for the disastrous Hyperion spill in 2021 and is one that puts our community at the forefront. Beyond allocating resources for the cleanup, this agreement seeks to ensure something like this does not happen again. Last year I secured nearly $3.5 million in federal dollars to help support Hyperion modernization efforts including spill prevention and containment. These city and federal resources going towards Hyperion improvements demonstrates our shared commitment to clean and healthy water for our neighbors and wildlife.”
