REP LIEU PRAISES RELEASE OF EYVIN HERNANDEZ AFTER UNLAWFUL DETAINMENT IN VENEZUELA

December 21, 2023

WASHINGTON -  Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the Biden-Harris Administration announced that it had secured the release of ten Americans detained in Venezuela, including Eyvin Hernandez, a UCLA Law School graduate and longtime LA County Public Defender.

“It is great that Eyvin Hernandez has finally been released from Venezuelan custody and is on his way back to his family. Eyvin was wrongfully detained by the Venezuelan government at the Colombia-Venezuela border in March of 2022 and has been in their custody ever since. Along with fellow Members of Congress representing parts of Los Angeles, my team and I pushed for the State Department to do more to ensure Eyvin’s safe return home. I am grateful to the Dean of the UCLA School of Law, Russell Korobkin, for first bringing this issue to our attention, to Eyvin’s family and friends for tirelessly advocating for him, and to the Biden-Harris Administration for securing his release. I am wishing all the best for Eyvin and his family after this unimaginable experience and am glad to finally see his safe return home.”
