REP LIEU LEADS LETTER SUPPORTING CALIFORNIA REQUEST FOR FEDERAL AID TO HELP TREAT COVID-19 PATIENTS

February 9, 2021
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) led a letter with 15 Members of the California delegation to President Biden expressing support for the state’s request for additional federal aid to help fight the COVID-19 surge in California.

In the letter, the Members write:

Dear President Biden,

Thank you for your service to our nation. We are writing to you in support of the request made by the State of California to the Department of Defense (DOD), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the deployment of federal medical personnel to support the treatment of a surge of Californians being treated for COVID-19 symptoms.

As you are keenly aware, our nation has been battling the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year.  We are grateful for the significant steps your administration is taking to create a coherent national response to the COVID-19 pandemic to increase support to the various states to treat those with COVID-19 and vaccinate the population.

Over the past several months, the State of California has seen a large surge in the number of Californians testing positive for COVID-19, those hospitalized or in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) being treated for severe symptoms and residents passing away while struggling with limited support from the federal government. This has greatly impacted the ability of hospitals and first responders to deal with COVID and non-COVID related health issues for California residents.

Recently, the State of California requested additional federal medical personnel, and additional materials from the DOD, FEMA and HHS in an effort to support hospitals as they treat patients with COVID-19. This request for federal support would provide critical assistance to our state as hospitals and public health officials work to treat patients and bend the curve as we ramp up vaccination against COVID-19. Additionally, California has requested assistance in securing vitally needed supplies like oxygen to treat COVID-19 patients on respirators and additional vaccine doses to inoculate Californians to combat this virus. We support these requests and believe they can help save lives, alleviate the challenges our state health system are experiencing, and get us closer to inoculating the population of California.

As we work together to get more Americans suffering from COVID-19 treated, provide assistance to our health system and vaccinate our population, we welcome any support that the federal government can provide to California.

Thank you for your consideration of this request and we look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
