REP LIEU HONORS JUNETEENTH, THE 155TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF SLAVERY
WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement in honor of Juneteenth. Congressman Lieu joined Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in calling for Juneteenth to become a Federal Holiday.
"It is my honor to commemorate Juneteenth, a day which marks the end of slavery in the United States. While today is the 155th anniversary of the end of a horrific chapter in American history, our country is still grappling with slavery's complicated legacy. Despite incredible obstacles, Black Americans have shaped our politics, our culture and our country for the better. We should celebrate those accomplishments and recognize that the freedom granted from slaves' emancipation won't be fully realized until we dismantle and remedy the systematic racism that persists in our country today.
