REP LIEU COMMENDS BIDEN ADMINISTRATION EXECUTIVE ORDER ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) released the following statement praising the Biden Administration for issuing an Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Executive Order establishes new standards for AI that aim to promote AI development and American leadership while protecting the safety, rights, and privacy of American citizens.
Congressman Lieu has been an outspoken advocate for federal action on AI, including through his bipartisan, bicameral bill, the National AI Commission Act, to establish a bipartisan, blue-ribbon commission of experts to analyze the United States’ current approach to AI and make recommendations to Congress on how to move forward. Along with Representatives Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Haley Stevens (D-MI), he also wrote a letter in July urging the Biden Administration to require federal agencies and vendors to follow the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework. In today’s Executive Order, the Administration is incorporating the NIST AI Framework into agencies and critical infrastructure operators’ risk-management practices. In addition, Congressman Lieu introduced a bill this Congress to mitigate threats posed by AI in the nuclear weapons space. The new Executive Order requires the development of tools to assess AI’s potential capabilities to produce nuclear threats.
“I commend President Biden for issuing this important Executive Order to harness the benefits of AI while managing its risks,” said Rep. Lieu. “The Order contains many actions on AI that my colleagues and I have pushed for, including the incorporation of the NIST AI Risk-Management Framework into the guidelines for federal agencies and the increased focus on reducing any nuclear threat artificial intelligence could present. I applaud President Biden for his leadership displayed through today’s EO and I believe we need strong congressional action to follow through on some of the goals he has laid out. That’s why I continue to call for bipartisan support of my National AI Commission Act, which would allow us to gain a better understanding of this technological wonder and how we can harness its potential for good. I am grateful to President Biden and the Administration for prioritizing AI, and look forward to continuing to work together on this pressing issue.”
