REP LIEU CELEBRATES ANNOUNCEMENT THAT ANNA MAY WONG WILL APPEAR ON U.S. QUARTER

October 18, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement on the Treasury Department announcement that former Hollywood actress Anna May Wong will appear on the United States quarter. The Anna May Wong quarter is the fifth coin in the American Women Quarters Program, which celebrates the accomplishments and contributions made by women in American history. Anna May Wong is the first Asian American historical figure to appear on U.S. currency. The United States Mint will begin shipping the Anna May Wong quarter on October 24th, 2022.

"I am thrilled by the news that Anna May Wong will appear on the U.S. quarter. Anna May Wong was a Chinese American actress born in Los Angeles, California in 1905. Her vibrant career spanned silent film, sound film, television, theater and radio. She appeared in more than 60 films, including one of the first movies to be made in Technicolor. As the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, she faced constant discrimination, frequently being typecast and passed over for lead roles in favor of non-Asian actresses. In the face of adversity, she kept going and became an internationally renowned actress. She is remembered not only as a great actress, but also as an advocate for increased representation of Asian Americans in film and media. I'm pleased she will be honored in this way and look forward to seeing the coin."
