REP LIEU APPLAUDS PRESIDENT BIDEN FOR RECOGNIZING THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement praising President Joe Biden for officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide. The announcement comes on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, when the international community commemorates the victims of the Armenian Genocide, during which as many as 1.5 million Armenians were killed in massacres and deportation campaigns carried out by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Throughout his time in Congress, Congressman Lieu has repeatedly spoken out about the need to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide.
“I am grateful to President Biden for his decision to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. By recognizing historical facts, President Biden is sending a signal to the world that truth and human rights are at the forefront of United States foreign policy. I’m pleased to have coauthored the Armenian Genocide resolution every year that I was in the California state legislature and in Congress, and am thankful that this year it will have a new, special meaning. Every year my heart breaks for the victims of the Armenian Genocide and their descendants, and I hope President Biden’s courageous leadership will provide them a new sense of peace as they continue to heal from this horrific tragedy.”
