REP LIEU APPLAUDS HOUSE PASSAGE OF GEORGE FLOYD JUSTICE IN POLICING ACT

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The bill, which is identical to the version that the House passed on a bipartisan basis in June of 2020, is a bold, comprehensive approach to hold police officers who engage in misconduct accountable, empower our communities, and build trust between law enforcement and our communities.

"Black Lives Matter. For too long, Black Americans have experienced harassment and excessive use of force at the hands of some law enforcement members. Last May, George Floyd was strangled to death by a police officer, adding to the long list of Black Americans who have lost their lives to police brutality and inspiring millions of people across the country to speak out against systemic racism and injustice. Today, I was proud to vote for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which will help protect lives and ensure accountability by mandating the use of body and dashboard cameras; ban chokehold and no-knock warrants; and end the transfer of made-for-war weapons to local police departments. It will also mandate training on racial, religious and discriminatory profiling for all law enforcement and improve transparency by collecting data on police misconduct. Congress has a vital role to play in rooting out racial profiling and police brutality. This bill offers substantive solutions to bring about real, institutional change. I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to support and pass this critical legislation that will save lives."
