REP LIEU ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LOCAL COLLEGE-GOING FOSTER YOUTH

LOS ANGELES – On Saturday, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) announced a new $5,000 per student basic needs scholarship to 50 college-going foster youth at Camp Ready, an event to welcome a new class of students to the Ready to Succeed program. Ready to Succeed is an innovative college and career accelerator organization with 200 foster youth and first-generation college student participants.
At the event, Congressman Lieu announced that the scholarship amount will be increased from $1,000 to $5,000 per student thanks to the federal funding he secured for Ready to Succeed through the annual government appropriations process. The scholarship will begin in the 2023-2024 school year and will help the students with typical expenses associated with starting college.
“It was a pleasure to be with Ready to Succeed scholars this weekend to announce the launch of the increased scholarship,” said Congressman Lieu. “Ready to Succeed does amazing work helping foster youth and first-generation college students graduate college and jumpstart successful careers. In the last two years, the college graduation rate from this program was 100%. I was honored to announce that this year, 50 foster youth will each receive $5,000 from the $1,000,000 I secured for Ready to Succeed. This scholarship will help the students start off on the right foot as they begin their college journeys and prepare for the rest of their lives.”
Congressman Lieu fought for and secured $1,000,000 for Ready to Succeed in the FY23 appropriations process.
Each year, Congress is responsible for allocating overall funding for offices, programs, and grants administered by the federal government. As a Member of Congress, Representative Lieu has the opportunity to advocate for programs that are beneficial to California's 36th Congressional District and the constituents he represents.
In Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023, Congressman Lieu secured a total of over $33 million in federal funding for various community projects in LA County. The projects address an array of pressing needs in California's 36th District – from reducing homelessness to protecting our endangered wildlife, supporting our young populations, and more.
