WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) released the following statement after the House passed the IG Independence and Empowerment Act, which includes his bill, the Inspector General Protection Act, to enhance the independence and integrity of the federal government's inspectors general. The IG Protection Act will require federal agencies and departments to notify Congress before enacting a personnel change, and require the President to report to Congress if an IG has not been nominated for 210 days after a position becomes vacant.

Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) sent a letter with 21 Members of Congress urging the Biden Administration to extend Temporary Protected Status to 1,400 Yemeni nationals living in the United States. The Members urged Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to extend TPS status by 18 months because of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

This legislation will help the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) address veteran homelessness in the Los Angeles area. In addition, it helps VA use already available funding streams for certain homeless veteran programs, thus reducing the need for taxpayer funds.
