Tillerson draws bipartisan fire over Russia

December 14, 2016

Several House Democrats joined the ranks of those for calling for a congressional investigation into Russia's alleged cyberattacks. "Given the gravity of these unprecedented attacks by a foreign state, we need a congressional investigation that is truly bipartisan, that is comprehensive, that will not be restricted by jurisdictional lines, and that will give the American people a complete and full accounting of what happened consistent with safeguarding our national security," said the group — led by House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and including the ranking Democrats on multiple national security-focused House committees — in a statement. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, former ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, also issued his own statement of support. "This isn't about who won this year's election," he said. "It's about the possibility of another country — Russia or otherwise — compromising the integrity of our democracy. Rep. Ted Lieu, who holds a computer science degree, also called on Ryan to launch an inquiry, arguing Congress "must investigate Russia's actions, not for the sake of a political party, or a President-elect, but for the sake of each and every American proud to live in a nation forged in liberty's name — a nation whose democracy has been a shining beacon the world over."
