Daily Breeze: South Bay Rep. Ted Lieu appointed to House committee overseeing federal budget

January 26, 2015

South Bay Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, will be appointed to the House Budget Committee, which addresses Social Security and Medicare funding and other fiscal matters, his office announced.

"I am thrilled to be appointed to such a crucial committee where I can put my prior budget and legislative experience to work to help all Americans," Lieu said in a statement. "In California — the eighth largest economy in the world — we put our fiscal house in order by investing in core priorities instead of giving tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.

"I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to set national budget policy that raises the wages of the middle class, protects Medicare and Social Security, and invests in infrastructure, education, and innovation."

Committee members may serve up to six years on the panel.

The former Torrance city councilman and and recently elected Democratic freshman class president succeeded iconic Westside Rep. Henry Waxman after serving nine years in the state Legislature.
