The Hill: Dem rep: Travel ban teaches Trump grandchildren he is not a ‘bona fide family member’
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) tweeted at first daughter Ivanka Trump Saturday, joking that President Trump's travel ban, which says grandparents are not considered close family members, is teaching her children that the president is not a close family member.
"Dear Complicit Ivanka Trump: Your dad is teaching your kids that he is not considered to be a close or bona fide family member. Just sayin'," Lieu said, quoting former Secretary of State Madeline Albright's tweet, saying as a grandmother she was "insulted" by the travel ban's "ignorance."
Lieu and Albright's tweets come as the Trump administration is under scrutiny for its definition of close family relationships.
The Supreme Court said Monday that parts of Trump's executive order, which had been put on ice by the lower courts, can be reinstated starting Thursday at 8 p.m. for refugees and travelers from six predominantly Muslim nations who do not have a "bona fide" relationship with a person or entity in the U.S.
They said foreign travelers from affected countries can only come to the U.S. to visit spouses, parents, parents-in-law, children, adult sons or daughters, siblings, step- or half-siblings, or sons- and daughters-in-law. But the policy excludes entry for visiting cousins, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.
White House officials say their guidelines for familial relationships were grounded in the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The White House reversed a part of the ban on Thursday that would allow refugees and travelers who have a fiancé in the U.S. to come to the country.
