The Hill: Dem lawmaker: Trump 'waiving executive privilege' by tweeting

June 16, 2017

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said Friday that President Trump is "waiving executive privilege" by tweeting about the investigation into ties between the Trump administration and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

Lieu said Trump's Friday morning tweets confirming that he was under investigation removed the president's ability to assert executive privilege.

"The more [Trump] tweets, the less executive privilege the White House will be able to assert, if any by now," Lieu tweeted Friday.

"I agree with you [Trump]. Please don't stop tweeting about the witch hunt. Thank you for waiving executive privilege [with] your tweets," he tweeted soon afterward.

Trump sent out a series of tweets Friday, including one that confirmed he was under investigation. The Washington Post first reported Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating Trump for obstruction of justice as part of the probe into Russian interference in the election.

"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt" Trump tweeted.
