REPS LIEU AND WILSON INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN BILL TO ENCOURAGE STATE AND CITY INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) introduced H.R. 3571, the bipartisan “City and State Diplomacy Act”, which will support state and local diplomacy with counterparts abroad. The bill will establish an Office of Subnational Diplomacy at the State Department, which will coordinate overall U.S. policy and programs in support of city and state engagement with foreign governments and officials.

REP LIEU INTRODUCES NDAA AMENDMENT TO BLOCK SAUDI ARMS SALES

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after introducing an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 that would prohibit the emergency sale of arms to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. On June 18, 2019, the House passed Congressman Lieu’s amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2020 on a bipartisan basis to block the execution of these 22 emergency sales.

REP LIEU INTRODUCES FEDERAL BAN ON LGBTQ CONVERSION THERAPY

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) introduced the “Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2019”, which bans LGBTQ conversion therapy. Conversion therapy, which fraudulently seeks to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, has been recognized by the national community of professionals in education, social work, health, and counseling as both dangerous and useless. REP LIEU PROVISION TO COLLECT PRETRIAL DETENTION INFORMATION INCLUDED IN FY2020 APPROPRIATIONS

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement after the House passed an appropriations bill with an accompanying report that directs the Bureau of Justice Statistic (BJS) to collect information on pretrial detention. Rep. Lieu has been a vocal advocate of pretrial detention reform since entering Congress and has called for ending the use of money bail. Nearly a quarter of individuals incarcerated in the United States have not been convicted of a crime.
