April 10, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, California Aerospace Caucus Co-Chairs Ted Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Ken Calvert (R-CA) introduced a resolution to establish May 3rd as National Space Day. Their National Space Day Resolution recognizes the significant positive impact of the aerospace community on the United States’ scientific and economic development. In the Senate, the National Space Day Resolution has been introduced by Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH).

“The United States leads the world in space development and exploration, and I am fortunate to represent leaders in space innovation,” said Congressman Lieu. “My congressional district is home to some of the nation’s foremost aerospace facilities, including the Space Systems Command at the Los Angeles Air Force Base. The aerospace community plays a critical role in our country’s leadership in scientific and technological advancement, as well as our national security. I am pleased to join Congressman Calvert and Senators Shaheen and Moran in introducing this resolution to recognize our out-of-this-world aerospace community!”

“National Space Day is an occasion to shine a light on the importance of space exploration and pay tribute to the inspiration accomplishments Americans have made in aerospace,” said Congressman Calvert. “As a Co-Chair of the California Aerospace Caucus, I’m proud to work in a bipartisan manner with my colleagues to introduce a resolution supporting the goals and ideals of National Space Day on May 3rd. California has a proud history of playing a key role in launching the innovation and discoveries that have propelled America’s leadership in space exploration.”

“Space innovation and exploration has grown exponentially in recent years as a result of the hard work and determination of aerospace leaders, researchers and developers,” said Senator Moran. “National Space Day recognizes the individuals and communities within the aerospace industry who have made contributions to space exploration and helped grow the United States’ leadership in space. I appreciate the leadership of the Space Foundation and the Aerospace Corporation for working together with Congress to inspire the next generation of astronauts, scientists and engineers, and recognize the storied history of aerospace excellence and leadership in the United States.”

“I’m proud to join Senator Moran on this bipartisan resolution to recognize May 3rd as National Space Day,” said Senator Shaheen. “When Americans first set foot on the moon, it captured the imagination of a generation. In the decades since, NASA and the aerospace industry have continued to push boundaries and inspire new generations to look up and dream big. As I’ve visited STEM programs in schools, aftercare programs and camps across New Hampshire, I’m confident in the future and the work we are doing to expand STEM opportunities to kids of all backgrounds.”
