REP LIEU COMMENDS HOUSE PASSAGE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL PROTECTION ACT

July 17, 2019

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) commended the House's passage of the "Inspector General Protection Act". The bill will enhance the independence and integrity of the federal government's inspectors general.

"Government watchdogs play a crucial role in ensuring government accountability. They root out waste, fraud, mismanagement, and abuse at all levels of government – saving the American taxpayer billions of dollars annually and ensuring government programs work for the people. Unfortunately, both Republican and Democratic administrations have hamstrung our inspectors general with persistent vacancies and underfunded budgets.

My bill will address both of these problems by ensuring Congress is made aware of inspectors general being place on administrative leave and when an IG vacancy hasn't been filled in a timely manner. I am grateful to my colleague Jody Hice of Georgia for partnering with me on this legislation, to Chairman Cummings and Ranking Member Jordan for recognizing the importance of strengthening our nation's inspectors general, and to my colleagues in the House for supporting this legislation. I urge the Senate to take up this bill."
